Answer
William Isaac Thomas is one of the founding members of the Chicago School of Sociology at the University of Chicago. He is most often remembered for his work on the "definition of the situation": --the way in which persons subjectively construct the meaning of social situation, sometimes with little connection to the objective facts. "If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences" is refrerred to as W.I. Thomas"s theorem.
